HOW TO TRAIN A DINOSAUR TO LIVE HAPPILY IN YOUR HOME

IGUANAS

Iguanas are still the number one selling lizard and make a fascinating pet, but
many end up deserted due to their size as their baby size and looks give way
to the bulk of a fully grown king of the lizards. If they are allowed to, they can
become un managable and vicious towards their owners and this can be very
off putting to any one that doesnt expect it.

But if you take the time when they are young, they can be as soft as a kitten
and a pleasure to handle. For anyone that is considering taking on an Iguana
i have a few tips that, if they consider them first, can i hope make life with
your Iguana a richly rewarding one for you and will perhaps stop another Iggy
being dumped and left for the rescue charities to deal with.

I know that a fully grown Iguana is a fearsome sight and that a scratch or
tailwhip from one is not a pleasant experience but taking the time to train them
when they are young will pay off tenfold when they are fully grown.

When you bring an Iguana home

Here are a few tips to get you on your way to owning a friendly Iggy,

When you bring one home for the first time you should place
it into its vivarium and then allow it a week to two weeks before you attempt to
pick it up, but make sure that it sees you around the viv regularly.

After this period, spend five or so minutes , twice a day
opening the viv and stroking it. Do this for about a week and look how it reacts
to this. You should see a marked change in reaction as the days go by , from, backing off and blowing his body up to look scary, to almost no reaction at all.

When you have got it to this stage it is time to pick it up. If you
have any doubts or fears about doing this you are best using a gardening glove on one hand. Pick it up with the glove and then hold it with it until you are confident
that it is calm. Do this for a few weeks, again twice a day for around five minutes.

All of this slow introduction will give your Iguana the chance to see that you are no threat and, if you are not used to handling them, will boost your confidence in
dealing with them.

When you have reached this stage it is just a question of regular handling so that it remains used to it . If this is done from an early age, when it reaches full size it will be no threat to your safety and will be a pleasure to own.

Iguanas really do make good pets but please think about what is involved with keeping them before you rush out and buy that baby you have seen in the local pet shop.
