The basics of keeping your iguana healthy
It it easy to keep your Iguana fit and healthy
as long as you take your time
to set the vivarium up correctly and keep to a good feeding regime.
The
temperature through the day needs to be about 88
degrees with a hot spot that is slightly higher and a cool spot around ten
degrees lower. This is needed because they dont have the ability to
regulate their own body temp. they do this instead by moving from hot
to cold to suit what their body needs at the time.
If
it is at all possible then a water bowl that they can imerse themselves in
is beneficial as it helps with the shedding process and is thought
to help iguanas with their digestive system. If this cant be dont then give
it a
swim in the bath once or twice a week, they love it.
Keep the humidity up in the tank by spraying evey day.
Diet
is very important and easily got wrong,Iguanas love
lettuce but avoid it like the plague. There is no dietry benefit to lettuce,
an
Iguana will pig out on it and gain no weight and there isnt enough calories
and vitamins to sustain them. A good diet is varied and containing many
leaf vegatables and fruit, such as ;water cress, corriander, spring cabbage,
dandelion leaves (if you can be sure that they havent been treated with
pesticides and the likes),mint, spring onions, mango, kiwi, banana and
many more.
The diet should be aided with one of the calcium
and vitamin d3 supliments
that are available from most pet shops, to help with normal bone growth.
A
u.v light is essential in the viv to replace natural sun light
which is used to help your lizard produce vitamin d3 itself. This is essential
for the lizard to help it produce healthy bone growth.
If the above tips are followed it will help your lizard to have a full and healthy life.
